Alternative Education // Educational Alternatives
University of Essex Centre for Work, Organization, and Society &Kaplan Singapore
29-30 July 2020 @ 10:00AM – 3:00PM GMT

A two day, online, conference on alternative education practices andwhat we can make of them today

Over many years, there has emerged a rich tradition of alternativeeducation practices, from the ideas and practices of Paulo Freireand Ivan Illich, to the formation of free schools andnon-institutional forms of organized self-education. Theseeducational alternatives are built upon a foundation of deeplearning, as participants take part out of an interest or enthusiasmfor the topic, rather than as a means to attain a qualification ordegree. The symposium will explore these approaches to appliedteaching and learning.

What can we make of these dynamics for rethinking approaches toteaching and learning today? That is to say what can be gleamed fromhistories and practices that are often quite critical of officialeducational institutions and brought back to enrich and improve more ‘standard’ teaching practices?

The symposium will be held entirely online and will feature akeynote session run by the Bras Basah School of Theory andPhilosophy. You will be contacted with joining instructions in thefuture after you have registered.
