The Association for Gender Research in Denmark and Copenhagen Business School are pleased to announce the 2024 Gender Conference, a scholarly forum dedicated to the exploration of research on gender. In 2024 the theme of the conference will be ‘intersectionality’.
The concept of 'intersectionality,' coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in the late 1980s, originally focused on the unique challenges faced by black women who were not only discriminated on the grounds of their gender or their race, but through combinations of the two, which could not be recognized by the legal system. Beyond legal aspects, 'intersectionality' emerged from discussions among radical black feminists, who critiqued the claims of universal feminism rooted in white Western contexts. The concept highlights how multiple aspects of identity intersect, producing varied forms of exclusion or prejudice, limiting individuals' agency and impeding anti- patriarchal and anti-racist efforts.
This conference furthermore explores the intersections between art and knowledge production. What can academic knowledges learn from art? How can art contribute to our research and education? We invite all forms of contributions that explore the interrelationship between artistic creativity and academic creativity. Uncovering such complexities remains highly relevant today, as the interplay of biases and discrimination along multiple axes continues to shape our individual experiences and social realities. Acknowledging the ongoing need for intersectional analysis, not least in relation to gender, the 2024 Danish Gender Conference calls for research that explores the many different intersections of gender.
For the 2024 conference on gender and intersectionality, topics, themes, and issues of interest include but are not limited to:
• Intersectional Feminism in the 21st Century Exploring the evolving landscape of feminism, focusing on the intersectional approach and its relevance in addressing contemporary gender-related challenges.
• Intersectionalities of Sexuality and Queer Identities Examining the complexities of sexual orientations (including cis-het positionalities) and queer identities within the context of intersectionality, considering how multiple aspects of identity intersect with sexuality, impacting the LGBTQIA+ community in particular.
• Global Perspectives on Gender Equity Comparing and contrasting gender equity efforts and challenges in different regions and cultures, emphasizing the importance of intersectional analysis. Reflecting on intersectional perspectives related to decolonization, post-colonization and indigenous knowledges.
• Disability, Gender, and Intersectionality Analyzing the unique experiences and obstacles faced by individuals with disabilities, especially in relation to their gender identities, and the need for inclusive policies.
• Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Academia Investigating the intersection of race, ethnicity, and gender within academic institutions, including barriers and opportunities for scholars with marginalized identities.
• Media Representation and Intersectionality Exploring how media shapes and reflects intersectional identities, addressing stereotypes, underrepresentation, and the role of media in social change.
• Health and Wellbeing Disparities and Intersectionality Examining the impact of intersectionality on health outcomes, including disparities in healthcare access, treatment, and public health interventions. Reflecting on the wellbeing and flourishing across genders, out-groups or
minorities.
• Economic Empowerment and Intersectional Approaches Discussing economic disparities and opportunities for marginalized groups, emphasizing intersectional strategies for economic empowerment and equality.
• Environmental Justice through an Intersectional Lens Investigating the intersection of gender, race, and socioeconomic factors in environmental issues, highlighting the importance of inclusive environmental policies.
• Artistic Expression and Intersectionality Celebrating the role of art in expressing and challenging intersectional experiences, exploring how artists use their work to address gender and identity issues.
• Feminist Cyber Law and Intersectional Digital Rights Exploring the intersection of gender, race, and technology for example within the legal landscape. This could include considering the evolving field of feminist cyber law, addressing issues such as online harassment, data privacy, and
digital equity.
• Open Gender Studies Stream Besides the above themes, the conference will also create stream(s) for gender studies papers not placed within the above themes. These will be grouped together based on their compatibility.
We invite contributions in a variety of formats from engaged researchers, practitioners, and artists across a wide spectrum of disciplines. We invite submissions in either Danish or English.
Conference Theme: Intersectionality
Conference Overview: The conference will take place 4-6 September 2024 at Copenhagen Business School, Frederiksberg, Denmark.
Multilingual Tracks: In acknowledgment of our diverse audience, the conference will feature tracks in both English and Danish. Participants are encouraged to submit in their preferred language and sessions will be structured accordingly.
Keynotes and Plenary Sessions: All keynotes and plenary sessions will be conducted in English, with opportunities for questions and discussions in Danish.
Submission Categories:
• Research paper track: Short papers (max 1500 words). The submission of a full paper ahead of the conference is optional.
• Idea / early work track: Outlines for research, practice or artistic projects at various stages of development, something you want to explore and brainstorm with others. Submit a 1 page description / max 1000 words.
• Teaching track: Share your experiences, innovative pedagogical approaches and didactic materials in teaching gender and intersectionality. Submit a 1 page description / max 1000 words.
• Workshops/Panels: Creative and/or interactive sessions, centered on a specific topic/theme/issue. Submit a 1 page description (max 1000 words) including convenors, potential participants, workshop objectives, timeline for the session (max 1,5 hour), max number of participants if relevant, etc. Workshops can be initiated by researchers, practitioners, and artists.
• Performances: Submit a 1 page description (max 1000 words) including e.g., materials, space, duration, and max number of participants. Open for both plenary and smaller formats (max 1,5 hour).
• Book presentations: Submit a 1 page description (max 1000 words) including the abstract of the book and your ideas of how to present/discuss it (readings, presentations, discussions, visual presentations, etc.).
Extended submission deadline for all tracks: 1 May 2024
Full paper deadline (optional): 1 August 2024
Funding: We hope to be able to offer a few conference participation bursaries earmarked for individuals from underrepresented groups and those facing financial constraints. More information on this will be shared in due course.
